Description

Paraffin wax is a traditional hot-wax resist used in pottery to prevent glaze from sticking to the bottoms and feet of ceramic vessels during firing.

How It Works and Application

  • Glaze Barrier: Melted paraffin wax is applied to bisque-ware (usually the foot or rim) to create a water-resistant barrier, stopping the liquid glaze from being absorbed into the clay body.
  • Clean-up: It ensures clean kiln shelves by preventing pots from fusing to them, and it burns off completely during the high-temperature kiln firing.
  • Melting Process: Potters typically melt solid paraffin wax in an electric skillet or a dedicated pot (often maintained around 120°C–150°C) and briefly dip the base of the piece into the molten wax, where it dries and hardens almost instantly.
