Description
Cobalt carbonate is a powerful, fine-grained pinkish-tan or lavender powder used in pottery as a reliable blue colorant for glazes, slips, and clay bodies.
Key Characteristics and Effects
- Colour Development: Small amounts (as little as 0.1% to 1.5%) yield strong, vibrant blues. Higher percentages can turn the glaze black.
- Dispersal vs. Oxide: It is weaker than cobalt oxide, but its finer particles disperse more evenly in glaze slurries, preventing the patchy or speckled look sometimes caused by the oxide form.
- Melting and Off-gassing: It is an active melter, but as a carbonate, it releases carbon dioxide gas during decomposition, which can cause pinholes or blisters if trapped as the glaze solidifies.
- Safety: The material is toxic if inhaled or ingested and can irritate skin or the respiratory system; potters must wear a proper respirator, gloves, and work in a well-ventilated space.
