Description
Tin oxide (stannic oxide, SnO2) is a colourless or white inorganic chemical compound that occurs naturally as the mineral cassiterite, which is the primary ore used to extract tin.
Key Properties
- Chemical Formula: SnO2
- Appearance: White or off-white fine powder
- Solubility: Insoluble in water, but soluble in concentrated acids
- Nature: Thermally stable and highly refractory (withstands very high temperatures)
- Conductivity/Semiconductor: Acts as an n-type semiconductor with high optical transparency.
?Common Uses
- Ceramics and Glass: Used historically and presently as an opacifying agent to turn transparent glazes milky-white in pottery (such as maiolica and delftware).
- Polishing: Utilized as a high-polish abrasive powder for glass, steel, and precious gemstones.
- Electronics and Sensors: Employed in gas sensors, solar panels, and lithium-ion batteries. When combined with indium to form Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), it creates a transparent, electrically conductive coating used in touchscreens and flat-panel displays.
- Cosmetics: Functions as a bulking agent or mild scrubbing particle in makeup formulations.
